In the perennial battle for sea power supremacy, major strides in sonar and radar have reduced acoustics and radars to the point where both the hunter and the hunted claim unheard (no pun intended) levels of detection and evasion capability. Like the barely audible rattle in an otherwise enclosed limousine, this reduction in “traditional” signatures has exposed other emissions that can be detected and classified by sensors as a signature and, therefore, identified as friend or foe. Chief among these emissions are the products of galvanic corrosion and the systems suited to combat it. In this white paper we will describe the case of a managed corrosion protection system for naval vessels that also offers benefits in reduced signature. We will show how each signature element related to corrosion and its protection system can be addressed by a low signature ICCP system. We will also show that this can be achieved with an added benefit of reduced lifetime cost over traditional sacrificial anode corrosion protection.

Description

All vessels are susceptible to galvanic corrosion below the waterline caused by current flow in seawater between the dissimilar metals used in their construction.

This can be countered by fitting sacrificial anodes close to the components susceptible to corrosion, so that these are corroded instead. However, for large vessels an Impressed Current Cathodic Protection (ICCP) system, which generates an electrical current in the seawater around the hull, cancelling out the galvanic currents, is usually a more cost-effective solution.

Both the galvanic currents causing the corrosion (including corrosion of sacrificial anodes) and the currents caused by the ICCP system can provide signatures that can be detected by other vessels and mines.
